HHD tech support
Posted on: 17/06/2010 09:19:59

I'm doing some work with Andy Connor from the Campaign for greener healthcare and have been asked about HHD tech support, in particular how often HHD patients are routinely visited by techs. Having visited a few tech departments in my time I know this is quite variable across the country. So I thought I would do a quick survey on the forum.

Can you please post back with how often techs routinely visit HHD patients, for what reason,  and the size of your HHD program. Can you also include how often the patients are routinely visited by nurses, if known.

thanks in advance

Fraser

We've got 60 or so home patients and if they were to have no breakdowns we would only visit them twice a year.  Once for a service of the machine, RO clean and water sample and then 6 months later we go back to clean the RO again and take another, less in depth water sample.  Very few manage to go unseen from service to service though.

Not a clue how often the community nurses visit.

We currently have six HHD patients. We visit quarterly for RO checks, filter changes and samples.  This then coincides with an annual service visit.Nurse visits also occur quarterly

In Sheffield we only regularly visit our HHD patients for water testing every 12 weeks and for an annual service as the patients clean they own ROs.

We will shortly have 5 patients at home. Techs visits are carried out every 3 months for filter change, RO clean/disinfection and water samples. The HD machine PPM will coincide with one of these visits. Sorry can't answer with regards to nurse visits.

Regards,

Roger.

We will shortly have 10 patients at home. Tech visits are currently every  4 - 6 weeks for filter change, RO clean and check, chlorine levels check post carbon cylinder,  sampling post RO and testing for endotoxin, TVC and Trace elements. Often put drain cleaner down pipes also during visit. Dialysis machine sampled 6 monthly and serviced annually.

We have 15 HHD patients and are putting another 4 home this year. Machine is serviced annually and we do a 3 month RO check and filter change plus chlorine testing. We've recently started endotoxin testing as well but haven't decided on an exact regimen for this yet! We are in the process of having a dedicated HHD nurse in post but no routine visits are conducted yet to my knowledge.

Hi All, here at Guy's we currently have 40 patients at home on HD, 7 of which are on daily nocturnal HD. Our patients are spaced across the SE but with some way outside our catchment area for various reasons.

We service the HD machines once a year, with a secondary service of the associated equipment at a different time. The patients are responsible for changing filters and cleaning R/Os and we have started to introduce backwashable carbon columns to limit the number of filters needing to be changed in the system, (we used to have 2 x 10 inch carbon filters).

We are starting a programme to check water quality with an annual assay and endotoxin and chlorine tests every 3 months on a rolling programme, to cover all seasons. We realise that this will tie-up 1 technologist for almost the whole year, so will rotate the work and maybe include the trainees.

Our home nurses, 2, visit the majority of our home patients every 6 - 8 weeks.

Hope that is what you require, David

Hi,    We currently have 23 HHD patients, none of nocurnal dialysis (yet), spread across SW wales.    We service machines annually + RO clean flow/cond check with minor machine service + RO clean at 6 months. Patients change their own carbon block filters (usually monthly).    Water quality check every 6 months (chlorine +endotoxin)

We have 2 HHD nurses who I believe try and visit HHD patients monthly.
