Priming volumes
Posted on: 21/05/2010 10:41:33

Could I get a quick poll on what priming volumes units have their equipment set to?  We currently use 600ml though are looking to reduce if possible.  Our current dialyser manufacturer recommends 500ml.

Cheers

Hi Garry,

on the machines which still use saline priming our set volume is 800ml, what are you hoping to reduce it to and for what benefit?

All in the name of cost savings.  It was hoped that we may be able reduce the amount of saline bags being used during set up and wash back.  On further investigation, by the nursing staff, it seems we are quite close to the minimum required anyhow.

Cheers

If there's 1000ml in a bag of saline why not just do 900mls?  You can't pass whatever is left in the bag to another machine anyway can you.

As far as our unit is concerened we have a choice of 1000mls or 250mls bags.  Obviously 250 isn't enough. The 250mls bags are MORE expensive than the 1000mls bags!

For a while we had a problem with staff accidentally spiking the saline bag before lining the machine, a fair amount of saline ran out of the bag before they actually started the prime phase, resulting in the bag running out before it reached the 900ml set volume. Dropping the volume to 800ml cured this.

How on earth do nurses "accidentally" spike the bag!

Did the occlusion made by the blood pump not stop the saline from running out Fraser?

Hi guys,

our machines (4008) have been set to prime with 500 mls. We can then wash back using the remainder of a 1000ml saline bag.

This works very well, and we experience no priming related problems at all.

Michael, that was our idea.  Unfortunately, the blood side tests then take a few hundred mil.

Ian,

they spiked the bag on purpose, the accidental part was doing it before putting the pump segment in!

Mick,

how do your staff do the connections to maintain sterility between prime and washback?
